Some New Wardrobe Additions & Tips for Bargain Hunting

Sometime late last year I was talking about doing a wardrobe overhaul, and I'm actually very happy to say that it's been going pretty well! I have sort of been neglecting the basics, which I know is really awful of me, but I have been having too much fun adding some big pieces to my wardrobe.

I have never really been too in love with wearing popular border prints, as much as I love to drool over them in ads and on other people. To me, they're just one of those "I love it on you, but I don't really care to wear it" things, and this has lead to several purchases of prints I loved to look at, but only ever ended up wearing once. So these things were pretty much the first to go when I started my wardrobe cleanup! However, this sort of lead to a couple seasons worth of a wardrobe without a "wow" factor: full of things I can wear every day, but nothing that I felt was good enough for a special occasion, or even simply something I both loved to look at, and to wear. I finally had to come to serious terms with my wardrobe and realize that just because I liked to stare at and giggle over prints with cute unicorns on them, they could hardly be farther from my own personal style and what I find practical and comfortable in, and so I didn't exactly want to cover myself in them.

So, I started to think about what sort of "wow" pieces I actually loved and could see myself wearing. After thinking about it for a while, I realized that pretty much all of the print pieces that I really loved were pieces I had been drooling over for years. In fact, practically none of my dream pieces were recent popular border prints, but mostly all-over, or understated prints from 2007 or before! To me, these symbolize a time when I felt like the Lolita trends most intercepted with my own personal style, as well as a time when I was first seriously getting into Lolita, and therefore were sort of something like my original dream dresses.

So, with something of a dream dress checklist in hand, I started to attempt to finally accumulate pieces that I had been lusting after for half a decade or more. It's taken about a quarter of the year, but I can now honestly say I only have about 2 more dream dresses to cross off my list.

The above picture are the recent "wow" additions to my wardrobe, and with the exception of the beige Juliette et Justine JSK (which was just a super good deal for a gorgeous dress!) these are all pieces from series that I have been wanting for years! And the best part is they all are in a style I love to wear, and in colors that fit with my wardrobe. Is it painfully obvious that red is my new favorite wardrobe color? Even the pinks in these pieces can easily be paired with red as well.

Looking back at the post I made talking about re-doing my wardrobe, I am actually very pleased to see that in terms of Classic and Sweet Lolita, I have kept very much on track! I am only bringing in older, screen printed Sweet Lolita pieces, and the Classic Lolita pieces I am bringing in are very lush and detail oriented. Now I just seriously need to work on the Gothic Lolita part of my wardrobe! I know I talked about nixing a big chunk of the h.Naoto and going more formal with my Gothic Lolita, but, honestly, because I wear it so much, it's just really difficult to do that and have it still be practical for everyday wear. So, while I had gotten rid of some h.Naoto that I was just bored with, I've actually brought a fair amount of the brand back into my wardrobe. I seriously just can't resist! Especially when you can so easily pick up second-hand h.Naoto pieces for $20!

While I was indeed working on the more expensive part of my wardrobe with these pieces, I actually
got, what I think, are incredible deals on some of these pieces. I'm not going to go into the details of my budget, but I figured out that all of these pieces cost about 40% of retail price.

How I've learned to find bargains in Lolita

Now, it's not that I don't sometimes make rash "I don't care how much it is! Just take my money!" decisions sometimes, but I at least like to pretend that when it comes to Lolita, I'm a pretty good bargain hunter.

• Shop second-hand. You're rarely going to get a better deal than buying second-hand! I am particularly fond of shopping on the EGL Comm Sales, but there are a few other places out there you can find second-hand Lolita pieces, including ordering from various second-hand Lolita shops based in Japan.
• Know what you want to buy. Having a little list of things you would like to own, or your wardrobe is missing, is essential to finding a bargain. After all, if you start picking up stuff just because it's cheap, with no real interest in wearing it, you might as well just be throwing that money away. I should know! That's how I got into the mess of having a huge wardrobe but absolutely nothing to wear!
• Know what their typical prices are. Window shop, a lot! Search around for older sales to see how much people have bought the piece you would like for. Try not to focus how much people are attempting to sell the piece for, but instead how much people are actually spending on it. Eventually you'll learn to know when a good deal comes along, and when you should just pass and wait for it to pop up again for a cheaper price.
• Haggling, trades, and payment plans. These things can be awesome for finding something for a really good price, or with an affordable payment plan, however, you really have to respect the seller's terms of sale or you might risk offending them, I cannot stress this enough. Generally, as a rule of thumb, I try not to ask if sellers are willing to lower their price or accept trades unless they specifically say that they are interested in either. I also do not ask for any sort of massive price reduction. There's no real rule about how much you should ask for a reduction if you're haggling over Lolita clothes, but it's often considered a bit rude to ask for a reduction of more than 15% to 20%, and you should always phrase it in a polite way, such as "would you consider $____" rather than something something that sounds demanding, such as saying "I'll give you $____" It usually doesn't hurt to ask if someone will accept a payment plan, but I will let them know straight away that I would like to pay on a payment plan, and for how long, because it's rude to spring it on someone after they've agreed to sell the item to you. I also try to keep payment plans as short as possible and aim for no longer than a month. I also try not to ask for both a reduction and a payment plan, especially because a seller is most likely to just pass on your offer completely and wait to see if someone is willing to pay them their asking price in one payment. It's not a good deal if someone buys it out from under you because you were being too cheap!
• Search for older sales posts. If you are looking for a good deal, your best bet would be to find it in older sales posts, generally about 5 days to a month old. Any newer than that, and people are still probably buying stuff from the post, any older than that and the seller might have just decided to keep the items. If you want to offer a lower price on an item (again, only if it is an appropriate price and the buyer is stating that they are accepting lower prices) people tend to be more willing to lower their price after their post stops catching people's attention. I know that when I sell stuff, if someone makes me an offer a week or so later, I'm always just glad to get rid of the piece by then!
• Be willing to compromise condition. You can find good deals if you're willing to compromise the condition. Many people offer huge price cuts on second-hand items because there is a snag in the lace, a few tiny spots that may or may not come out with a hand washing, is missing a detachable bow or waist ties, or has a snapped elastic. If you know how to fix these things, or don't mind the sometimes microscopic drops of mystery stain that some items are sold with, you can usually find some great deals on some pieces. Not all of these things are defects too! It's generally considered that modifying a piece will lower the value, and I actually have gotten a few great deals on skirts that I wouldn't otherwise fit, but who's waistbands had been modified to go an inch or two bigger!
• Patience, patience, patience! Sometimes it can take months for certain items to pop up again on the sales comm! While this is sort of a downer for those that really want something now,  it's also something of a blessing in disguise. I find that the waiting and the hunting for a particular piece really makes me reconsider if I want it in the first place. If I'm totally over something after not being able to find it for a month, I just take it off my wish list. When you actually have to work for pieces (and I don't just mean saving up the money to buy them!) you really start to learn exactly what pieces you truly love and will appreciate owning, rather than which ones are just sort of a current obsession. There's absolutely no shame in realizing your latest oh-gosh-I'm-just-going-to-die-if-I-can't-own-this dream dress was just part of a month long obsession you had with pancakes or unicorns, or pancakes shaped like unicorns. We all go through those sorts of obsessions, especially in Lolita, when really cool things are constantly being released!

I have found a ton of great bargains on the sales community! From a $30 BtSSB cutsew that had a small stain that I could never even find on the back of a sleeve, to picking up new-with-tags items for amazing deals because they ended up in someone's lucky pack, to that time I got something like 30% off a brand new top at an h.Naoto booth because the button popped off as I was trying it on. What are some of the best second-hand deals you've gotten? I would love to hear them and be completely jealous over them!

Ask Miss Caro-chan: Short Socks?

Over on my Formspring I was not-so-recently asked a little question about shorter sock-lenghs:

Hi Caro-chan ^^ I'm a newbie lolita from Hong Kong. I am wondering if it's ok for sweet lolitas to wear "short socks" (above your ankles, but way below your knees). Is it a must for sweet lolitas to wear overknees and high socks? ^^

It's definitely OK to have other options for sock length! Sock length popularity in Lolita has sort of been all over the place, way back when it was sort of anything-goes when it came to sock lengths, and then it sort of leveled out to a rather strict "knee highs, opaque tights, and over-the-knees only!" idea for a number of years, before finally returning a bit to a sense of anything-goes. That incredibly enlightening history of Lolita sock lengths aside, short socks have definitely been making a comeback in Lolita! Especially now that hotter weather is here, they're a really great way to still have some sort of leg decoration going on without the stuffiness of wearing socks or tights.

Shorter socks tend to come in two different lengths: crew (which I believe our anonymous was describing) and ankle. Crew socks hitting somewhere around the mid-calf area, while ankle socks hitting, you guessed it, at just around the ankle.

I'm sure you have noticed that the above socks are particularly Sweet Lolita, as that tends to be the style that works very well with this style of sock. However, it can also work well with a Classic or Country Lolita coordinate, as well as being perfectly suitable for those who are more inclined towards Otome, Dolly Kei, Mori, or even Cult Party Kei. Shorter socks might not be for everyone, unfortunately, as cute as they are, if you have thicker calves, they can make your legs look stocky, because the ruffles that are almost always on them tend to hide the shape of your ankles. Many Lolitas also find them a bit too childish for their tastes, and some seem to think, because of that, they're just not supposed to be worn in the fashion, despite the overwhelming amount of ads and street snaps featuring them!

If you're on the lookout for a cute pair of shorter socks to wear with Lolita this summer, you can often find them in regular clothing stores, particularly in the kid's section! As they are something of a staple of traditional little girl's fashion. If you want your sock-shopping to be done in secret (because, let's face it, it's a little weird to go lurking around the kid's sock isle sometimes) sock dreams has several pairs on their site. I actually used to have this pair, until I lost them, that looked especially cute worn with a pair of Victorian styled short boots! It made it look like the boots had a pretty lace ruffle around the top of them!

Print Bandwagon: Perfume Bottles

There are many motifs that brands like use over and over again, and many times you will easily notice that certain motifs will be used by multiple brands, often all at once it seems. Recently, a couple brands, namely Angelic Pretty and Mary Magdalene, have revisited the theme of perfume bottles for their new prints.

While this theme is nowhere near as popular as something like rabbits or toys or some other ridiculously cute thing, there have been a few stunning pieces in the past to feature perfume bottles. Not only the sought-after Rose Toilette from Angelic Pretty (a personal favorite of mine), but even Metamorphose has released a punchy version of this classy motif.

With this new wave of perfume bottles, we have a bit of the old, and a bit of the new! The old comes in the form of Angelic Pretty re-using this theme, this time a bit more cutesy. The print on this new Angelic Pretty perfume bottle dress (named Glass Bottle of Tears, oddly enough) is, I think, both a bit hit and a bit miss. I think that the perfume bottles themselves are gorgeously illustrated but I can't find a single colorway of this print that actually looks good. The pastel versions just sort of look like a bland blob from a few feet away, and the black version looks sort of ridiculous. I think it's the stripes in the background that I am just not a fan of. While they are my favorite part of Rose Toilette, which featured elegant and detailed stripes, that looked a bit like fancy Victorian wallpaper, Glass Bottle of Tears just looks like generic fill-tool stripes, and sort of remind me of the quick-fix striped background that are in a lot of Bodyline prints (who also have actually released a dress featuring perfume bottles as well!).

The new comes in the form of the Mary Magdalene dress, which, unless I'm mistaken, is the first time Mary Magdalene has used, not only a border print, but something other than a solid color or all-over floral. I think this ended up being a completely gorgeous dress! The print is so elegant and classy, and it completely suits Mary Magdalene's style. Now, when I first heard people talking about this dress, I have heard a few people complain that they feel like Mary Magdalene is, very belatedly, hopping on the print trend, and are acting like the next print from Mary Magdalene is going to feature pancakes shaped like bunnies riding on a rainbow made of ice cream. Honestly, I am pretty excited to see Mary Magdalene try something new! The results are obviously gorgeous, and completely fitting for the brand.

Innocent World's Antique Perfume Bottle.

The other perfume print to come out recently comes from Innocent World. I actually wasn't aware that Innocent World released a perfume print until I was writing this. And before I googled it, just to be sure, I was trying to imagine what a print of perfume bottles by Innocent World would look like, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that what they released, looked a lot like what I imagined a print by them would look like! Innocent World's print features a relatively simple and understated print featuring some very elegant monochromatic vintage illustration styled perfume bottles, all lined up along the hem. All in all, it's a very cute dress!

There are very few of the major Lolita brands that haven't released a perfume print, so far as I know, I don't believe that Baby The Stars Shine Bright have released one to feature perfume bottles (although, they have made so many prints, I'm sure one of them includes a perfume bottle somewhere!). Moi Meme Moitie certainly hasn't, although, I can imagine if they did, it would be pretty awesome and feature coffin-shaped bottles filled with electric blue liquid, with some rosary beads and candelabras nestled amongst the bottles. Or, there's also a pretty good chance it might also look like a clip-art disaster.

Personally, I really enjoy seeing brands reuse themes again and again. I know some people might feel like themes get a bit stale after a while, but I feel like so long as brands are picking themes and motifs from a big enough selection of them, and not just doing cherries and rabbits over and over again, I think it's actually pretty fascinating to see how a brand will reuse the same theme, 6 years later, like in the case of Angelic Pretty and their perfume bottles, or how the same theme can look so vastly different when interpreted from one brand to the next!

Blogspiration: Historically Inspired Lolita, Frill Review, Wearing Lolita To "Inappropriate" Places, & More!

You may recall that last autumn I updated with few of my favorite posts by other bloggers at the time. I've been thinking about doing it again, and so here we are! After all, if the sad state of my blog updates hasn't clued you in, I've been doing a lot more blog reading than I have been writing!

First up, a tutorial for using molds to make your own cabochons from Artsy-Fartsy Mama! As some of you might know, I pour a lot of my own resin pieces, and so the thought of making my own cabochons sounds like a pretty tedious task unless I happen to have a mold that can make many pieces, which is an incredibly expensive thing to ask for, and a still pretty expensive and also messy thing to make on my own, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that this tutorial used polymer clay! A much quicker, and less-messy alternative, and the pieces still looked amazing! Now, not everyone out there assembles their own jewelry pieces, so I though that this tutorial would be perfect for those that do a lot of deco work, as cabochon-heavy deco pieces tend to be pretty expensive to make, since cabochons can cost almost a dollar a piece. Which is no big deal if you only want one, but as anyone who's been bitten by the deco bug knows, one cabochon is never enough! You can pick up the mods she uses from Mold Muse, which look incredibly professional and are reasonably priced. After checking out her tutorial, I think I might pick up some molds from them this week!

Xelyna the Gothic Lolita has a very useful translation of Kera's June issue of Top 16 Fashion Keywords. It's basically just a pretty cool list of 16 trends for the month, and it's nice to see some things I'm already very interested in on there (Classic Lolita & teeth motifs!) as well as some things that I think sound pretty cool and I'd love to try out this summer (wearing all white & see-through gowns!).

Calanthe's Nightingale is a pretty amazing Tumblr, and I actually just realized that she has some pretty awesome longer blog posts on there! Unfortunately, due to the "real time" nature of Tumblr, I just completely missed out on these when she posted them last year! But I gladly ate them up when I discovered them on her awesome Tumblr last week. Along with some other very interesting blog posts, she has a small series entitled The Historical Lolita, where she has some incredibly in-depths posts about making coordinates inspired by specific decades from the 1700's. I have to admit, I don't know enough about the 1700's to tell one decade from the next, so these were amazing to read and to get inspired by! You can check out her posts about 1760, 1770, 1780, and 1790 on her Tumblr. I know these are from a while ago, but I would definitely love to see her pick up this series again!

Over on The Everyday Goth, the ever-witty Mary Rose has been doing some wardrobe cleanup and spends a post musing about What Makes A Wardrobe Complete. It's not necessarily a post with tips and tricks for those of you looking for an answer to that question, but I found her commentary on a What Not To Wear book she found in her bookshelf hilarious and completely relevant to any one of us, Lolita or Goth, who are outside of the "mainstream" fashion scene. For those of you looking for an actual check-list for a Goth wardrobe, later in the week she followed up on that post with her own list of what she considers a complete Goth wardrobe.

On Violet LeBeaux, my go-to blog for easy and fun tutorials and girly pink inspiration, she recently posted a tutorial for a cute retro style, but oh-so-trendy, beaded collar that is so much simpler than I ever thought one could be! I love the one that she is modelling above, because it looks so much like a vintage pearl collar that my grandma used to own! I think this easy tutorial could be applied to so many different styles of Lolita: a beaded pearl collar for Classic Lolitas, a pink deco'd collar for the Sweet Lolita, a black pearl & blue (or red!) cut-class bead collar for the Gothic Lolita, and even a studded one for any Punk Lolitas out there! I love the retro look of this collar, because I think that it could also easily be an accessory that can be worn outside of Lolita, or even in other fashions like Dolly Kei or Cult Party Kei.

There was a recent post on EGL, the LJ-based hub for Lolitas worldwide, about wearing Lolita in "inappropriate" places, such as donning the frills for jury duty! It was just a post where people chimed in and told their stories about the least appropriate place they have worn Lolita, but it was such a fun read. It's things like this that remind a lot of us that Lolita is just your everyday fashion for a lot of people worldwide!

Finally, I want to talk, again a little bit about the Lolita convention that recently happened, Frill! Despite the fact that I couldn't make it this year, the whole weekend it was happening, I was so excited for everyone who got to go XD I was refreshing Tumblr and EGL a lot more than usual that weekend, hoping people would post some quick snaps of it. Thankfully, the blog posts and photos have finally started rolling in from it! I am overjoyed to learn that almost everyone who went counted it as a complete and total success! I am also excited to hear that, hopefully, next year's Frill plans to be in a bigger and better location. All the reports I've heard have said that there were between 150 and 200 attendees, which is a pretty massive amount of Lolitas to all gather in one place! I am so excited to hear that Frill was a success, because something like this, a massive gathering that was organized by and for Lolitas, in their very own convention setting, is really a huge step for Lolitas in the US! Even though Frill was a very long ways away from me, next year, I'm sort of determined to make it in person.

Usakumya's Humble Beginnings

I was lurking around on Hello Lace, a Lolita fashion database, the other day and stumbled across something from 2002 in the Baby the Stars Shine Bright section that took me for surprise!

 

This might not be too surprising at first, as brands have released weird fuzzy animal bags in the past, but what surprised me about this was that it was labeled as an Usakumya bag! That's right, this weird little sheepy monster, that someone on Tumblr noticed an unfortunate similarly to the Nina chimera from Full Metal Alchemist that I have been unable to unsee, was the grand-bear to the iconic Usakumya bags! Someone else mentioned seeing this particularly fluffy Usakumya in the Kamikaze Girls movie, but I haven't seen the movie in so long, I don't recall exactly where in the background this fluffy little creature is lurking.

 It would seem there are a lot of Usakumya's lurking around! I'm sure some of you are still having haunting dreams of this particularly terrified looking knock-off. Even the BtSSB versions have a few sort of odd looking bunny-bear's lurking around. Take, for instance, this 2005 version that seems to be a combination of the old fluffy one and the newer ones, or the many odd things Baby has put Usakumya's likeness on, including this most unfortunate pen.

Over the years, I've sort of grown fond of this little chameleon of a bunny-bear, and with each new, and sometimes nightmarish, thing Baby slaps this little guy's fluffy stuffed head on, the more I sort of want one of my own. Maybe I need to get a little jar (covered in fake fur with a fluffy bunny-bear head on it? Hint hint, Baby!) and start an Usakumya fund!

What about the rest of you? Is there anything in the history of Usakumya's that you just find yourself not being able to resist? Or are you just not into these fluffy little bears in disguise?

I Want To Make Comic Inspired Coords Too!

Lately I've been seeing a ton of really adorable Avengers coordinates out there, and while I loved the heck out of this movie and ended up seeing it twice (Apparently everyone else wants to see it as much as I do, because when I saw it last week, the theater was just as crowded as when I saw it the day after it came out! I feel like I am going to have to make it a 3rd time if I want to experience this movie from someplace better than the second row!), I feel like I can't really ever see myself wearing a red-white-and-blue coordinate, especially not a purple-brown-and-green one! So I got to thinking, what's a comic that, stylewise, is a little more my speed? The Sandman, of course! While not exactly a traditional superhero comic and there probably aren't going to be any movies based on the series anytime soon, it's still one of my favorite series out there. And heck, The Sandman had a huge effect on the fashion choices of many Goths for the last 20+ years, so it's no small stretch to be able to make some of the styles work for Gothic Lolita too!

I chose to just do a few coordinates inspired by a few members of the Endless (and gang) because, well, if you're familiar with the comic, you'll know that at least one member of the Endless is very... minimalistic when it comes to clothing choices.

 Dream/Morpheus

This one was actually pretty difficult to put together! If mostly for the fact that Morpheus isn't always the most fashion-forward guy out there. But, I tried to put together something that I thought would be appropriate, so I chose a very formal looking OP, and a cape lined in red (because most Lolita capes don't exactly come in flame-print, thank goodness). A red gem necklace and a pouch-like purse are a nod to Morpheus' iconic ruby and sand pouch, but I was hard pressed to find a Lolita appropriate gas-mask.

Death

This one was really fun to put together! And it's definitely something I would love to wear. I started with a light and breezy OP, for a little bit more of a casual look, and added some iconic 80's Goth accessories, and topped it off with a top hat I think Death herself would enjoy, as well as a black parasol. While ankhs are pretty much never seen in Lolita, it's sort of impossible to make a Death themed coordinate that doesn't feature one!

Desire

 

I actually spent a bit of time trying to decide if I wanted to make this particular outfit boystyle or not, but then I decided to go with the slightly more obvious choice of making an Erololi coordinate. I sort of compromised with the boystyle and went with a bloomers-based Ero coordinate, which is not really something people tend to wear in real life when they wear Ero, as it looks too much like you just forgot to put your dress on in the morning, but I think it's very appropriate for Desire.

Destiny

 I actually thought this set was going to be a piece of cake, because I thought it would be easy to find a brown hooded Lolita capelet! I sort of just assumed that Classic brands release them all the time, but apparently not. I spent forever hunting down this one! I figured a Destiny inspired coordinate would be very fussy, old school, and stick very strictly to the "rules". For an even more Destiny appropriate coordinate, I'd probably replace the long strap on the book purse with a chain strap!

Matthew

Okay, so this isn't one of the Endless, but I sort of wanted to do a raven-themed boystyle coordinate! While not exactly something you would see the character that Matthew was on would wear, it's sort of more of an "all of Morpheus' ravens, in general" coordinate. Honestly, I think this is more of a Lucian styled coordinate, but he's not a raven any more, but a librarian. If you haven't read the series, does any of this make any sense to you XD? I'm guessing it doesn't.

Princess Barbara

This post needs a little bit more pink! And who's the pinkest (okay, so really it's more of a purple...) character in The Sandman? Probably Princess Barbara, dream self of a very multifaceted woman named Barbie. I've paired up some fit-for-a-princess pieces, including a JSK with a corset-like waist, with a big gem pendant that could make a pretty good Porpentine.

I could have done a few more coordinates, as there are just tons and tons of characters in the Sandman, many of them fabulously dressed (like that foppish rabbit-headed vampire or Wanda), but I chose to pick a few favorite characters instead.

Marvel mainstream, DC imprint, and anything in between, do you have any comic book characters you have found yourself particularly inspired to lolify? Like I mentioned, I really loved seeing a lot of the Avengers coordinates online and I'd love to see anything else comic book related people have come up with!
