Split Color Wigs

One of the big fads in the Lolita communities at the moment is 2 color split wigs or dye jobs, which, if you haven't guessed, is an almost Cruella Deville styled dye job often found in dual candy colors. This style of dye has been around for years in the Western goth scene and has been seen fairly frequently in the Gothic & Lolita Bibles for the past few years, but it is just now getting popular in the Lolita scene here due to a few Western indie shops selling split color wigs for a reasonable price.

There are a few places you can get hold of wigs like this outside of Japan, you can order from either MintyMix or Cosplay Wigs USA. Both shops have a few different color options and are around $50 for one wig. Or, if you are daring, you can try to create your own split wig with this tutorial. Keep in mind that you're not exactly going to save a ton of money making your own split wig, since you're going to have to buy 2 wigs to cut up and due to the way you cut them you are only going to be able to get one wig out of the two. The upside to making your own is you have complete control over the colors.

Two different kinds of split wigs from indie shops, Cosplay Wigs USA on the left, MintyMix on the right.

If you're looking for some split color inspiration, you can find a few examples in various Gothic & Lolita Bibles, below are some that I stumbled across. This hairstyle works well with any Lolita style, blond and black working well with Gothic, pastel duos work well with Sweet Lolita, and natural duos work well with pretty much any style.

Ever since I saw the tutorial on how to make these I have been looking at my own small wig collection trying to decide whether or not I want to sacrifice two of my three wigs to make a split color wig. I eventually decided on sacrificing my pink wig and buying a purple wig to split with it. I'm still waiting for the purple wig to come to see if it's the right shade of purple, and if it is, hopefully I'll get some pictures of the process up! Why a purple and pink wig when pink and black or black and white or any other number of color combos would be much more suited to me and my wardrobe? Well, let's just say I have plans for something ridiculously over-the-top that should be ready by Anime Boston this year. Speaking of Anime Boston, I just paid for my Artist Alley table : 3 but more about that some other time.

  3. Vertical two-tone was super popular in gyaru fashion for a while! That was where I first saw it, and was surprised when Lolitas started following the trend recently :P I think it is a cool style :) Personally, I prefer two colors mixed in together more like with streaks or layered colors, but two-tone is still pretty cool. Especially with bright pastels!

  4. I didn't read the tutorial you linked to, but to me it sound harder than it should be, based on the rest of what you said. Since it is split right down the middle, wouldn't it just be easier to take one of a whatever color and dye the other half? [something about this may have been mentioned in the tutorial, so I apologize again for not having read it.]

  6. I've thought of that and I imagine dying it would be really messy and probably end up bleeding all over the other half if you didn't seal the other half somehow. If I was super skilled at dying wigs (which I'm not XD) I'm sure dying it would be easier, but I'm much more crafty with scissors and some thread so that's the route I'm going. It doesn't look too hard :O Just a bit messy (I'm going to be finding wig hairs all over for weeks!)

  7. Did it come from gal? I was wondering what Jfashion used it first since I know I had seen them featured in some japanese fashion mag before now. Gal trends always seem to eventually end up a Lolita trend!

  8. I've been really feeling the split lately. Originally I thought it was kind of meh, especially in dyed hair instead of a wig - like, just pick a color already! But the more I see it, the more I like it. I think my next 'do is going to be red on one side and blue on the other.

  9. XD I've actually been calling them that too, I don't really know what they are called but "two toned" brings up a lot of stripey or wigs with a different undercolor or something when I tried searching for them.

I hope you enjoy your MintyMix wig :D They look really fantastic!

  11. haha yea like the usamimi and the furry headpieces!

I don't know if it originated in Gal, but I have been seeing it for quite a few years in Gal fashion. More recently I saw some change to horizontal two-tone because vertical split is already old XD

  12. Doesn't a lot depend on what the wig is made from? From what I've heard, you can't really do much to restyle wigs made from synthetic fibers, and I'd assume that the same is true for dyeing a synthetic wig; you'd just end up ruining it :|

  13. These sound like a lot of fun :3 I'm not sure how'd they work in classic lolita, though :\ Maybe a curly-haired wig that's red-brown on one side and platinum blonde on the other?

  14. I find two tone wigs amusing, but I don't think it would be something I am dying to do. Hell I am scapping for pennies so I can buy my first petticoat and corset so for the moment buying even a normal wig is completely out of the question. Perhaps when I am able it will be all passe XD Oh well, you can't have everything.
I'm not completely sure I like that pink and brown combination. Also I think you have to do a coordinate really elaborate to work or at least very balanced so it doesn't take all attention from the rest of the outfit.
